How to Choose a Deck Builder in Connecticut

Registration, insurance, comparable quotes, and the red flags that should end a conversation.

Start with registration and insurance

Connecticut requires home improvement contractors to register with the state, and any builder working on your property should carry liability insurance and workers' compensation coverage. Ask for proof of both — a registration number you can verify and a certificate of insurance — before you discuss design. Builders who bristle at the question are telling you something.

Get 2–3 quotes on identical specs

The only quotes you can compare are quotes for the same deck: same footprint, same height, same board and railing products, same footing specification. Hand every builder the same brief and watch what differs. A quote that's thousands lower usually differs in something unlisted — thinner framing, skipped flashing, unitemized permits — not in efficiency.

Read the quote like a contract, because it becomes one

  • Dimensions and materials named exactly — board brand and line, railing system, footing type and depth.
  • Permits itemized — fee amounts and who pulls them.
  • Payment tied to milestones — a deposit, a framing payment, a completion payment. Never a lump sum up front.
  • Warranties in writing — builder workmanship and manufacturer material coverage, separately stated, with durations.
  • Timeline with a start window — and what happens if weather or inspections slip it.

Red flags

  • Suggesting you skip the permit.
  • Pressure to sign today for a "today-only" price.
  • No written quote — a handshake number or a text message.
  • No local references you can actually call, or references only from out of state.
  • Asking for cash or a payment that bypasses the contract.

References worth calling

Ask for two or three recent local jobs and actually call them. The useful questions: did the builder show up when promised, did the price change mid-job and why, how did they handle the inspections, and would you hire them again. A builder's best references are homeowners two winters into a deck — that's when shortcuts show.
